Life in Prison for Saddam?
Look at the “life” sentence for the Pan Am 103 Bomber.
NEWS FLASH!!!
GW BUSH MAKES DEAL WITH GADHAFI, LETS DICTATOR OFF THE HOOK FOR MASS MURDER OF 189 AMERICANS
|
Bill O’Reilly says Saddam should be offered life in prison, rather than the death penalty, in exchange for "full disclosure" about weapons of mass destruction, terrorism ,etc. "I would make that deal," says O'Reilly, who opposes the death penalty for anyone for any crime. President Bush points out that Saddam is a notorious liar and so "full disclosure" is not a realistic expectation. Bush endorsed the "ultimate penalty" for Saddam, strongly supported the death penalty as Texas Governor, and his Attorney General John Ashcroft has ordered its use on the federal level. An ABC News-Washington Post poll on December 14 found 60 percent in favor of the death penalty for Saddam, and only 32 percent opposed. In prison, Saddam could write books, give media interviews, and entertain foreign dignitaries.
If you want an idea of what "life in prison" means for a killer in the international context, consider Abdel Baset Ali Mohamed Al Megrahi, the former Libyan intelligence officer convicted in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. He was found guilty of murdering 270 people, including 189 Americans, and was told by three Scottish judges he must spend at least 27 years in jail before he was considered for parole. This was reported as being a ”life sentence.” He was assigned to a “tough” British prison in Scotland. However, he is living in a five-room apartment with a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, shower, sitting room, an office with a computer and bookshelves, and entertainment center with television. The accommodations are in a Scottish prison, where Al Megrahi was sentenced to a term of “life,” which may turn out to be far shorter than that, as little as 20 years.
Secret video footage smuggled out of the prison and provide to the News
of the World, Britain’s biggest selling Sunday newspaper, shows that Al Megrahi has facilities that “rival a four-star hotel.” The paper reported that, “Fresh food and meat butchered in accordance with his Muslim faith is delivered for him to prepare himself. Other hot meals are delivered to his rooms.” The paper said that visitors to his suite have included former South African president Nelson Mandela and U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan. Mandela was always close to Libyan dictator Muammar Gadhafi, and Annan brokered the deal that resulted in Al Megrahi and another Libyan being turned over for trial as long as the prosecutors did not pursue the responsibility of Gadhafi and his regime for the terrorist crime. The death penalty was also ruled out. Critics called it a version of “Let’s make a deal,” and noted that Gadhafi was given, in effect, a “Get out of jail free” card, even though the British government reportedly had evidence that Gadhafi personally ordered the bombing. Susan Cohen, who lost her daughter in the blast, wants Gadhafi held responsible for this crime.
Libya seeks reward for scrapping weapons
Now comes the report that Gadhafi has agreed to dismantle weapons of mass destruction programs that he shouldn’t have had in the first place! Susan Cohen says she feels totally betrayed. John Bolton, the conservative and hard-line Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, was reportedly kept in the dark about the behind-the-scenes secret maneuvers that produced the deal. Cohen says that If Gadhafi can be rehabilitated after mass murder such as this, then bin Laden could come back and join the international community. “What kind of anti-terrorism president would do this? Gadhafi has triumphed. He blew up an American plane and is getting away with it,” she said. The deal smacks of the phony agreement that Clinton made with North Korea on nuclear weapons that was subsequently violated by the communist dictator. Cohen believes Gadhafi made the deal so he could get American oil companies back in Libya and generate needed funds for the regime that he could later use for the same weapons that he is supposedly going to give up now.

Insult to the dead
By Robert Kellaway and Andrea Vance
THIS is the luxurious prison lifestyle of the Lockerbie bomber—the Libyan jailed for the terrorist killings of 270 people.
Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was sentenced to life in 2001 for his horrific attack, which blew up a packed Pan Am airliner over a tiny Scottish town.
But although caged in one of Britain's toughest jails, our exclusive pictures show the 51-year-old monster occupies a suite with facilities to rival a four-star hotel.
They include his own kitchen and shower-room, a sitting room, office, and bedroom with en-suite toilet.
COMFORTABLE: The Muslim mass murderer kneels to pray in his cosy suite inside Glasgow's notorious Barlinnie jail. A well-padded sofa is there to relax on and remote controls for his entertainment system lay on the coffee table. His well-stocked collection of books and videos can be seen in the bookcase |
Disgust
His rooms are kitted out with a colour television, video recorder, stereo and personal computer.
Prison bosses have even piped Arabic TV station Al-Jazeera—famed as the mouthpiece of terror chief Osama bin Laden—into his cell.
Meanwhile, unlike other prisoners forced to barter their precious phonecards, Al Megrahi is allowed unlimited access to the telephone.
Our astonishing photos were smuggled out of Glasgow's Barlinnie prison by an insider disgusted at facilities laid on for the bomber.
They show how floral curtains soften the lines of Al Megrahi's barred windows—and framed art prints adorn the walls of his "cell".
The sofa in his day room is big enough to seat three. His coffee table is littered with remote controls for his entertainment system.
Fresh food and meat butchered in accordance with his Muslim faith is delivered for him to prepare himself. Other hot meals are delivered to his rooms.
Intelligence officer Al Megrahi is also allowed to keep a private collection of videos, books and pictures.
Visitors to his ground floor suite have included former South African president Nelson Mandela and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Lockerbie Bomber's 'Comfortable' Conditions Attacked
By Ian Marland, Scottish Press Association
A Tory MSP today attacked prison conditions given to the Lockerbie bomber as being “comfortable” after a newspaper published pictures showing his cell.
Bill Aitken said he was angry at the apparent luxury in which Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was being kept at Glasgow’s Barlinnie Prison.
The News of the World carried pictures of the former Libyan agent inside his living quarters, which is set apart from the rest of the prison. |
