America's Global Commitment Through NATO to Protect One Billion People

Dear Friend of America's Survival,

As a result of expanding NATO to 29 countries in 2017, American troops are now obligated to defend 28 other countries, including tiny Montenegro -- and perhaps in the future the Ukraine. "Today, NATO [i.e. the U.S.] protects almost 1 billion people," says NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

In London on December 3 and 4, NATO marks its 70th anniversary. 

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says, "More Allies are meeting the guideline of spending 2 % of GDP on defense. This year, 9 Allies will meet the guideline. Up from just 3 Allies a few years ago."

SECRETARY GENERAL JENS STOLTENBERG also said:

We don’t see any imminent military threat of Russia against any NATO country, but what we see is a strategic challenge. And we see a Russia which is investing heavily in new, modern capabilities, including nuclear forces, and a Russia which is violating a cornerstone arms control agreement in Europe, the INF Treaty, deploying missiles capable of reaching European cities within minutes, and missiles which are nuclear capable. And we see a Russia, which has been responsible for aggressive actions against neighbours: Georgia, Ukraine, but also have forces in Moldova without the consent of the government in that country.

He said NATO is involved in Ukraine:

NATO is providing practical support to Ukraine, helping them to build their naval capabilities, especially the Naval Academy. And NATO will continue to provide practical and political support to Ukraine, at the same time as we support efforts to try to implement the Minsk agreements and find a sustainable, lasting political solution to the crisis in Ukraine.
