 The Curious Gaps in Marco Rubio’s Cuba Report By Cliff Kincaid The Trump Administration says that Iran has been waging war against America for almost 50 years, and they are correct. That’s a rationale for going to war. But what about the communist Cubans, who have been waging war on the United States since Castro seized power in 1959? That’s 67 years. The Trump Administration has published a new report, "Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism," which documents most but not all Cuban-sponsored terrorism and subversion on American soil. I read this report and wondered why, in view of the evidence, the Cuban regime has escaped the same fate now being inflicted on Iran. Cuba is only 90 miles from the U.S. and once hosted Soviet nuclear weapons targeted at the United States. The report was released by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, born on American soil to Cuban immigrants. "For more than six decades, the Cuban regime has been the leading sponsor of radical leftism and Third Worldism in the United States," Rubio wrote on X. "The State Department is exposing the full history of Cuban espionage and subversion in our country. The American people deserve to know." The Obama Connection But the case against Cuba is much stronger and more dangerous than that. The “full history” omits the details about President Barack Hussein Obama’s communist connections to Cuba and the Soviet Union. We exposed all of this on May 22, 2008, before Obama was elected to his first term. Among other revelations, we discussed:
Rubio’s report also ignores the Soviet/Cuban role in the assassination of JFK. Not only has our nation been subjected to espionage, subversion, terrorism, and assassinations directed by Cuba, the widow of former CIA Director James Woolsey says that he suffered from Havana Syndrome before his death. The health problems known as “Havana syndrome” affect U.S. diplomats, intelligence personnel and military officials overseas. They are named after the brain damage experienced by U.S. diplomats in Cuba and stationed in other countries. After it was first documented in 2016, the federal government under Joe Biden said it had not figured out what happened and blamed “gaps” in the intelligence gathered on foreign enemies and adversaries. In June, however, two controversial Biden-era assessments that concluded Havana Syndrome was not a communist weapon were rescinded. A New Communist Weapon In other words, the Trump Administration, under new management, has concluded that Havana syndrome IS believed to be associated with the regime and its Russian and Chinese backers, and the Intelligence Community under Biden preferred to look the other way. Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee say evidence indicates a microwave weapon may be responsible for the mysterious illness and that the Intelligence Community engaged in a cover-up. Their report asks, “Is the Intelligence Community Hiding the Real Reason for This Phenomenon?” The answer is yes. So let’s understand the evidence in the Cuba case, as well as what has been offered to justify a war against Iran. It turns out that the evidence on the Cuban role in terrorism against the United States is just as substantial, even more so, than the evidence against Iran. And now there’s an indication that the Cubans, with Russian and Chinese backing, murdered a former CIA director through the cumulative effect of Havana syndrome. Lee Harvey Oswald’s Network What is more, the State Department’s Cuba report highlights the role of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, without noting that JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was a member of the group. Here’s what the report says: “The Fair Play for Cuba Committee (FPCC), founded in April 1960 in New York City and funded by the new Castro regime, was the first of many groups dedicated to building a revolutionary Cuban column within the United States. The group placed full-page ads in The New York Times, organized American delegations to Havana, hosted pro-Castro protests and strikes, and built local chapters across the country to advance the revolutionary vision of the ‘New Cuba.’” There is much more to the story. Oswald had connections to such groups as the Fair Play for Cuba Committee and the Socialist Workers Party. When apprehended, he requested an attorney from the Communist Party USA. The Cubans wanted Kennedy dead because he had opposed the Cuban revolution, tried to overthrow Castro, and tried to have Castro assassinated. In his last prepared speech before his death, Kennedy declared that he was determined to stop communism's advance around the world by making the U.S. into the strongest military power on earth. Former CIA officer Brian Latell's book, Castro's Secrets, discloses intelligence information that Castro knew that Oswald was going to kill President Kennedy. The U.S. Intelligence Community, including the CIA and FBI, engaged in a cover-up regarding the facts about Oswald and his communist connections out of fear of another military confrontation with Soviet Russia. Nuclear war was a very real threat. These facts are made clear in the book Communism, the Cold War, and the FBI Connection by Herman O. Bly, a retired FBI special agent. The 1998 book reveals that he was hired by Dr. Lothar Metzle, who ran the CIA unit known as the Communist International Group (CIG), to investigate assassin Lee Harvey Oswald’s communist connections. After doing so, Bly wrote, “The Warren Report concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted as a lone assassin, but I believe the heads of the FBI, CIA, and President Johnson wanted the Oswald case brought to a conclusion as fast as possible as they did not want another crisis with the Soviet Union so soon after the Cuban missile crisis.” Ex-communist Ion Mihai Pacepa wrote, Programmed to Kill: Lee Harvey Oswald, the Soviet KGB, and the Kennedy Assassination, a book that explains how Oswald was recruited and programmed to kill by the KGB. This former Romanian intelligence chief, the highest-ranking intelligence official ever to defect from the Soviet bloc, documents that Oswald was recruited by the KGB when he was a U.S. Marine stationed in Japan and that, after defecting to the Soviet Union, he came back to America three years later for the express purpose of killing Kennedy. Even though the Soviets, for their own reasons, subsequently tried “to turn Oswald off,” Oswald went ahead with the plan and was already “programmed” by the communists to kill Kennedy. How the Fake News Media Helped Castro Another “gap” in the new State Department report on Cuba concerns the role of the Western media in bringing Castro to power. Herbert Matthews, the Times correspondent in Cuba at that time, wrote, “This is not a Communist revolution in any sense of the word.” He said, “In Cuba there are no Communists in positions of control.” Matthews added, “Fidel Castro is not only not a Communist, he’s decidedly anti-Communist.” But in a national broadcast on December 2, 1962, Castro declared, “I am a Marxist-Leninist and will be one until the day I die.” President Kennedy’s widow, Jackie, had singled out The New York Times for criticism for helping bring Castro to power. Her views were documented in the book Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy. She cited Ambassador Earl E.T. Smith’s book, The Fourth Floor, on how the U.S. State Department had paved the way for Castro’s takeover. The title is a reference to the officials responsible for Cuba policy who were on the fourth floor of the State Department. Smith argued that Assistant Secretary of State Roy Rubottom, and his associate William Wieland, had to be aware of Fidel Castro’s communist affiliations. Wieland was the State Department’s chief of Caribbean affairs and a friend of Herbert Matthews. Accuracy in Media (AIM) founder and chairman Reed Irvine noted, “It was Matthews who built up Fidel Castro and is often credited with having made his takeover of Cuba possible. Matthews was never identified as a Soviet agent, but there is no doubt that his work was of great value to the Soviets, whether he was a dupe or an agent.” At a 1979 AIM conference, Ambassador Smith explained how The New York Times had rescued Castro from obscurity and how Matthews had likened him to Abraham Lincoln. Red Tint of the Fake News Media Our liberal media are still attracted to the notion that Castro, rather than being a cold-blooded killer, was a romantic “revolutionary” who brought health care and educational opportunities to his captive people. I reported on Washington Post reporter Karen De Young telling a left-wing Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) seminar that the Communist guerrilla groups in Central America were considered "the good guys." This trend had been seen previously in the coverage of Fidel Castro's Communist revolution in Cuba. DeYoung wrote a series of stories datelined “At a Sandinista Training Camp,” during the Cuban-backed revolution in Nicaragua. At that time, she reported that despite claims by Nicaraguan President Anastasio Somoza that the Sandinistas were Communist terrorists, the Sandinistas said they favored the establishment of a “pluralistic democracy,” not a “new Cuba.” We Exposed This Years Ago At a 2011 National Press Club conference, I noted that I had run into Castro’s operatives on several occasions in Washington, D.C., first when one of Castro’s spies, Teofilo Acosta, praised the late Washington Post news editor, Laurence Stern, and when Juan Jacomino, second secretary of the Cuban Interests Section, was attending the Latin American Solidarity Conference to argue for release of the Cuban spies known as the Cuban five. We discovered that Jacomino had been serving as a Cuban correspondent for Al-Jazeera, the terror TV channel functioning as an intelligence-gathering arm and propaganda front for entities as diverse as the Muslim Brotherhood and the Cuban regime. Laurence Stern was the national news editor of The Washington Post. When he died in 1979, I covered his memorial service, noting that among those who eulogized him at the memorial service presided over by Post executive editor Ben Bradlee was the Washington station chief of the Cuban intelligence service, Teofilo Acosta. I reported that he had praised Stern as a “friend.” In fact, Acosta said, “I’m from Cuba, I am Marxist-Leninist. I am human. Larry Stern was my friend, one of my best friends. I loved him.” He said he taught Stern how to rhumba. It was Laurence Stern who used his key position at the Washington Post to try to whitewash rather than expose Orlando Letelier. Documents recovered from the briefcase of Letelier, a former ambassador and later cabinet officer in the government of Chile under the Marxist president, Salvador Allende, demonstrated that he was being financed out of Cuba and tasked with manipulating American journalists and others. The Post dismissed the significance of the documents possibly because Letelier’s address book included Stern’s business and home phone numbers. In 2014, just a few blocks from the White House, in the basement of a black Baptist church, the chief of the Cuban Interests Section plotted with former terrorists and members of the communist Workers World Party to convince President Obama to release communist spies and terrorists from American prisons. The two-day event, the main focus of the “Five Days for the Cuban Five” campaign, was open to the press, enabling this columnist to attend and film the activities of the hard left as they operated under the watchful eyes of José Ramón Cabañas, Chief of the Cuban Interests Section in Washington, D.C., and his agents. Obama’s Affection for Castro “Today,” Obama said after Castro’s death, “we offer condolences to Fidel Castro’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Cuban people. In the days ahead, they will recall the past and also look to the future. As they do, the Cuban people must know that they have a friend and partner in the United States of America.” A “friend and partner” with a regime that sanctioned the murder of an American president? Obama is mentioned in the State Department report on Cuba on page 46, where it is explained that,” In 1995, Barack Obama launched his first-ever run for political office in the living room of Dohrn and her husband, Bill Ayers – another co-founder of the Weather Underground who would go on to become Professor of Education at University of Illinois at Chicago.” The report discusses his “opening to Cuba,” which trained terrorists for attacks on America. But that brief mention ignores his relationship with Communist Frank Marshall Davis, his childhood mentor. We documented that back in 2008. The media tried to destroy me and my organization as a result. Rubio’s report notes, “Cuban agents infiltrated the top levels of the State Department, the National Security Council, and the Pentagon, operating undercover for decades without detection.” It omits the White House itself. Why? The cover-up continues. Terrorist leaders Bill Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, who helped launch Obama's political career in Chicago, still have not been prosecuted for their alleged roles in the 1970 bombing murder of San Francisco Police Sergeant Brian V. McDonnell. A bomb filled with heavy metal staples exploded at the police station and ripped through his body. He was in the hospital for two days, bleeding from his wounds, before he finally died. By the way, former CIA Director James Woolsey and top Cold War defector Lt. Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa co-authored the book Operation Dragon: Inside the Kremlin's Secret War on America, published in 2021. The secret war continues. Reagan Knew the Enemy All of this is important because President Reagan had himself commented on how the international communist movement had killed Democratic President John F. Kennedy. In a speech in Indianapolis in July 1968, President Ronald Reagan stated: “Five years ago, a president was murdered by one who renounced his American citizenship to embrace the godless philosophy of communism, and it was communist violence he brought to our land. The shattering sound of his shots were still ringing in our ears when a policy decision was made to play down his communist attachment lest we provoke the Soviet Union.” That marked a key turning point in the direction of the national Democratic Party, which then abandoned anti-communism. The direction of the Democratic Party as an adjunct of the international communist movement was solidified under President Barack Hussein Obama, an agent of influence for Russia, China, and Cuba that even the Trump State Department and Marco Rubio are afraid to identify and address.
