Psychedelic Drugs and the Revolution

You may have read in the Baltimore Sun that The Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research is opening at Johns Hopkins Medicine and is being funded by a $17 million donation from a group of private donors. A press release says, "Psychedelics are a class of drugs that produce unique and profound changes of consciousness over the course of several hours. The Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research will focus on how psychedelics affect behavior, brain function, learning and memory, the brain's biology, and mood."

The release said the center's "operational expenses" for the first five years will be covered by private funding from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation and four philanthropists: Tim Ferriss, author and technology investor; Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress; Blake Mycoskie, founder of the shoe and accessory brand TOMS; and investor Craig Nerenberg.

While this project is said to be designed to use psychedelics "to study the mind and identify therapies for diseases such as addiction, PTSD, and Alzheimer's,"  there are political implications for such research.

In her chapter of our book on Obama's legacy, Permanent Revolution, Dr. Tina Trent describes how the Obama Administration facilitated the use of marijuana and how, building off the successes of the Soros-funded marijuana movement, a group called the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is now demanding acceptance of “psychedelics,” or mind-altering drugs that create hallucinations. Although marijuana itself is a hallucinogen, MAPS is proposing easy access to “psychedelic medicine,” including LSD and Ecstasy.

Trent notes that such drugs are seen by some as another means by which Christianity can be neutralized.  Such drugs help create a "oneness" with "God," eliminating traditional Christian notions of humans being separate from God and in need of a mediator, Jesus Christ. 

The 1960s “New Left,” which became the Weathermen and the Weather Underground, was an outgrowth of this approach. Members of the Weather Underground were involved in arranging the escape from prison of LSD guru Timothy Leary. Bernardine Dohrn, who praised the drug-crazed Charles Manson gang killers, herself issued a statement on September 15, 1970, saying:

“Dr. Leary was being held against his will and against the will of millions of kids in this country. He was a political prisoner, captured for the work he did in helping all of us begin the task of creating a new culture on the barren wasteland that has been imposed on this country by Democrats, Republicans, Capitalists and creeps.

“LSD and grass, like the herbs and cactus and mushrooms of the American Indians and countless civilizations that have existed on this planet, will help us make a future world where it will be possible to live in peace.
