Dear Friend of America's Survival,
An AP story about the British election results quoted Mathew Goodwin, a professor of politics at the University of Kent, as sayng Boris Johnson matched a bit of leaning to the left on the economy with a similar lean to the right on Brexit, migration and crime. Johnson “appears to have grasped one of the new unwritten laws in politics: It is easier for the right to move left on economics than it is for the left to move right on identity and culture,″ he wrote on his blog. Which means that the "conservatives" move left to pick up votes. Johnson, for example, wanted to pump more money into the failing national health care system. A true conservative would want to reform and eventually abolish it. You can see that Goodwin blog post here. I think he's right. Unfortunately, that helps explain Trump's move to the left on matters like gay rights and paid family and medical leave. Overall, he tends to capitulate to the left on spending. Trump's conservative base has to put pressure on him from the right. Otherwise, he will take conservatives for granted. For America's Survival, Cliff Kincaid
